Things to do in Tuscany

There is no end to things to do in Tuscany. Make it a point to experience the wonders of the region in and around Florence, Siena, Lucca, Chianti and the Val D’Orcia.

Here are some of the highlights:

•    See the cultural sights of nearby walled cities and hill towns, and bike ride along the city walls in Lucca

•    Drive the Tuscan countryside south of Florence down toward Siena for scenic views of medieval villages, old farmhouses, soaring Cyprus trees, vineyards and olive groves.

•    Take a wine tour in the Val d’Orcia and Chianti. Enjoy wonderful Tuscan views and outstanding wines like world renowned Brunello di Montalcino.

•    Enjoy the local food and wine with a long lunch or dinner. Remove all sense of urgency and just relax for a few hours.

•    Visit the Museo Piaggio in Pontedera near Pisa to see graceful Vespa motorscooters and other modes of transport

•    Climb belltowers like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Duomo and Campanile in Florence, the Torre del Mangia in Siena, and Torre della Rognosa in San Gimignano for spectacular views

•    Spend the day in Pinocchio Park in Collodi, dedicated to the beloved fictional wooden puppet. This unusual theme park features sculptures that depict scenes from the story, a carousel and carnival rides.

•    Explore the Apuan Alps and ski when weather permits

•    Enjoy aperitivo in Florence to socialize and relax before lunch or dinner. Ask for a Compari like the locals or go for a refreshing fruit juice cocktail.

•    Follow the Strade del Vino regional wine itinerary and visit vineyards, wine cellars and local food producers

•    Wander through the Crete Senese south of Siena for utterly Tuscan landscapes. Drive or stroll along cypress-lined roads winding through rolling farmland.

•    Take a scenic drive through Chianti for views of vineyards, olive groves, rural churches and imposing castles, and make sure to sample the wine of the region

•    Experience the horrors of a torture museum. There are a surprisingly large number of them - San Gimignano has at least two!

•    Watch the sun set over Florence from the Piazza Michelangelo in the Oltrarno district. See breathtaking views of the city with Ponte Vecchio up close and the hills in the background.
