How to get to Umbria

Arriving in Umbria is easily done by car, rail, or air. Travelers frequently fly into Rome or Florence for the hour drive to the Umbria region or they choose to fly directly into the small airport in Perugia.

Most visitors will prefer to rent a car to maximize their experience in Umbria by discovering hidden corners and medieval villages. The A1 highway that runs between Rome and Florence is the primary route into Umbria as well as delivering the loveliest views along the way. The primary access routes into the region (off of A1) are at Orte, and entry is also possible via the Siena-Perugina route too.

One thing to note is that most travelers discover that they will do a lot of walking, even in towns without walls or that permit driving. Because of this, it is best to plan your visit to Umbria with a firm understanding of your preferences in this area. Driving will mean parking, and for some that can become challenging.
