Romantic Getaways for 2020

happy couple on the beach. Romantic getaways

While the opportunity to enjoy a couples’ getaway right now may be limited to one or more rooms in your home, a walk around the neighborhood, or a drive in the car, it won’t always be the case. In fact, travel experts know that romantic getaways are likely to be some of the most popular choices for couples once quarantines end.

The next thing to ponder, then, is just which are the best places for couples to go? Which of the world’s many destinations rank as the ideal romantic escapes? The team at Travel + Leisure actually found 50 spots that they deemed ideal for romantic getaways and couples’ vacations. While there are a lot of beach areas, there are also romantic getaways for the foodies of the world, the adventurers, the active couples, and more.

So, while you might be looking for places to go for an anniversary celebration put on hold, a romantic spot for a winter ski break in late 2020, or just a quick trip that rates as one of the most romantic places to visit, we have choices below.

The BVIs

The British Virgin Islands have always been considered a sailing destination for their flawless blue waters and year-round good weather. They are also among the top spots for romantic getaways. There are many excellent beaches, including the charming Smuggler’s Cove Beach ideal for couples. It is also a good choice for hikers who can head into Gorda Peak National Park.

France

An entire country may not seem a likely choice for one of the best vacation spots for couples, but it is hard to find a region of France that doesn’t have a lot of romantic appeal. There is the eternal appeal of Paris, but there is also Provence. Head to this southern area for cycling, food tours, and truly show-stopping scenery. There are many luxury rentals to book and these alone might be your perfect option for a romantic retreat. The country is also home to the Cote D’Azur where famous Cannes is found, as well as the location of nearby Monaco, and stunning coastal scenery. There is also the winter season in France, and it is here that skiers revel in the Alpine region’s excellent ski areas, including Chamonix, Courchevel, Meribel, Megeve, and more!

Barbados

It would be impossible to make a list of the destinations ideal for romantic getaways without also mentioning beautiful Barbados. Home to scores of “platinum” beaches with dazzling white sands, it is a land of flawless sunrises and sunsets, friendly locals, amazing food and drink, and world-class snorkeling and water sports. While Carnival season has come and gone for 2020, the annual harvest festivals are still on the horizon, and Barbados is certainly an island to visit for the couple that enjoys a party atmosphere, with a dignified and classic style.

Costa Rica

This amazingly well-preserved country has coastline on both the Caribbean and the Pacific. It features a massive eco-system and is the perfect spot for the couple who wants to visit authentic rainforest settings, swim in flawless seas, enjoy any sort of water sport, or simply take in the amazing and profound beauty of this earth-friendly destination.

Greek Islands

Say the names Mykonos and Corfu and you bring up visions of bright sun, blue seas, and bold white buildings in traditional island styles. The many Greek Islands have perennial appeal, and it is why they rate as top honeymoon and the best couples’ vacations destinations. They are ideal if you want a seaside retreat with options for hiking, biking, and exploration. Dining along the waterfront in a harbor town? Check. Heading inland for a farm-to-table experience? Check. Waterfront accommodations? Absolutely, check!

Hawaiian Islands

It is interesting to note how many people forget these far away islands as one of the best options for romantic getaways for couples. Each island has a different geography and look. There is the “baby” of the chain known as Hawaii, and it is home to an active volcano and amazing beaches. Far to the north is Kauaii, the oldest of the big islands and home to the world’s rainiest location, a navigable river, and lots of amazing trails.

St Barts

Charming towns and bays, amazing restaurants and shopping, white sand beaches with crystal blue waters, and loads of charming private villas make St Barts a Caribbean destination that sits at the top of the list. As one expert noted, it is able to “blend the sophistication of St. Tropez with the laissez-fare Caribbean lifestyle,” and rates as a perfect romantic retreat.

Tuscany

Described by those who visit it as one of the most romantic spots in the world, it is home to some of the best food and wine, medieval architecture, charming bicycle rides, and the eternally beautiful hills. Discover villages, olive groves, vineyards, and scenic beauty at every turn. And with options for private villas, it is nearly impossible not to fall in love with the Tuscan countryside.

Turks & Caicos

A lesser-known destination in the Caribbean, it is home to excellent sailing and water sports. A group of islands, Turks & Caicos has an enormous range of beaches with almost any possible condition desired. Whether you want white sands and calm, shallow waters or you want to head out for some windsailing or kiteboarding, this is a romantic and adventurous spot.

Are these the only romantic destinations for couples to plan to visit this year? No, this barely scratches the surface of the many different destinations ideal for a romantic retreat. Whether it is just a spot for the two of you, or a couples’ getaway with friends you’ve been unable to spend time with for a while, there are excellent spots to explore. Try those from the list above or consider alternatives that feature many of the same amenities – beaches, activities, food, and luxury accommodations, and you will be on your way to an unforgettable escape.
