    Driving in Grand Cayman

A Guide to Exploring the Island's Roads

Grand Cayman, the largest of the Cayman Islands, offers visitors a rewarding driving experience with its own set of rules and regulations. Whether you're a seasoned driver or a first-timer, here's everything you need to know about driving in this Caribbean paradise.

Drive on the Left (like the UK)

One of the first things to note is that in Grand Cayman, just like in the United Kingdom, you drive on the left side of the road. This can be a bit disorienting for visitors from countries where driving on the right is the norm, but it doesn't take long to get used to.

    Steering Wheel Placement

If you decide to rent a car in Grand Cayman, you'll find that small rental cars have the steering wheel on the right side, similar to the UK. However, larger vehicles, often imported from the US, have the steering wheel on the left. Keep this in mind when selecting your rental vehicle.

    No Local Driving Permit Required

Unlike some other Caribbean destinations like Antigua, St Lucia, Barbados, and Anguilla, Grand Cayman doesn't require a local driving permit when renting a car. This makes it convenient for tourists to explore the island at their own pace without any additional paperwork or costs.

    Road Conditions and Traffic Regulations

Grand Cayman boasts wide roads in excellent condition, making driving a pleasant experience. The island features numerous roundabouts with clearly marked lanes, which help facilitate traffic flow. Additionally, you'll find some traffic lights at major intersections.

    Speed Limits and Enforcement

To ensure safety on the roads, Grand Cayman enforces strict speed limits. The speed limits typically range from 15 miles per hour near schools to a maximum of 50 miles per hour on the larger roads. It's wise to adhere to these limits as they are strictly enforced to maintain road safety.

    Geo-Localization and Vehicle Tracking

Vehicles in Grand Cayman have number plates with a chip that allows for geo-localization. Initially introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to track confinement breakouts, this system has been continued for security purposes. As a result, vehicle-related crime on the island is minimal.

    Fueling Your Vehicle

When it comes to refueling your vehicle, you'll find petrol stations conveniently located throughout Grand Cayman. The cost of petrol currently ranges from CI$ 5.60 to CI$ 5.90 per gallon. Service station attendants will fill your tank for you and payments are accepted in both US dollars and Cayman Islands dollars (CI$) using cash or credit cards.

    Car Rental

If you plan to rent a car, the car rental offices at the airport are situated in a separate area. However, they are within easy walking distance from the arrival and departure halls, eliminating the need for shuttle services. The process is usually painless and hassle-free, allowing you to quickly begin your exploration of the island.

    Uber / Taxi Service

While there are no Ubers available on the island, Grand Cayman has a good range of taxis to help visitors to get around.

Driving in Grand Cayman offers a delightful way to explore and make the

most of all the island has to offer.
