Overview of Provence

Provence is a way of life, not just an amazing vacation destination. Arrive in this storied land and enter a world filled with color where you will be immersed in the quintessential French lifestyle. Serendipitous discoveries surprise you at every turn, from sunflower fields bursting with yellow cheerfulness to the greenery of endless vineyards and the smoky gray of ancient olive groves. All is infused with the seductive aroma of lavender and illuminated by the clarity of Mediterranean sunlight. Provence is the perfect antidote to the ordinary, where everyday cares fall away amid the freshest food, excellent local wine and classic views of the French countryside. Spend leisurely days exploring Roman ruins and walled hilltop villages while enjoying the sweet bloom of cherry blossoms. Visit attractions like the awe-inspiring Roman ruins in the Alpilles, valued UNESCO World Heritage sites and the Van Gogh museum at Monatere St. Paul de Mausole. Then stop by at Chateauneuf du Pape for chocolate and wine tasting. Become a part of the bustling city of Aix-en-Provence, attend a glassblowing workshop in the Luberon and enjoy classical, pop and rock sounds at the Chateau de Lourmarin music festival. Or, if you wish, simply pack up a crusty baguette, some local fromage and a bottle Cote du Rhone, hop on your bicycle and experience the wonderful Provençal climate as you wander down winding roads under startling blue skies.

DISCOVERING PROVENCE

From the home base of your luxurious private villa, plan lazy days exploring the wonders of Provence. Wander down the streets of Gordes on foot to appreciate old stone buildings and you will discover why so many of the rich and famous make this area their home. Closeby St.-Remy-de-Provence, a tiny market town with a history that stretches back to Roman times, was made famous by the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh. Roman ruins of the original town still stand, and you will appreciate the town’s breathtaking architecture, trendy boutiques and, of course, wonderful restaurants. Menerbes, the setting of Peter Mayle’s best seller A Year in Provence, is a must-see. Wealthy Aix-en-Provence, the historic capital of the region, is known for its beautiful people and streets lined with elegant residences and boutiques. This bustling university town provides you with the opportunity to join the locals at a farmer’s market, where you will find an explosion of flowers and colorful fruit, vegetables, and herbs de Provence made of a combination of sage, thyme, rosemary, and oregano that is the basis of Provencal cuisine. Known as the birthplace of painter Paul Cezanne, Aix, as it is called, is rich in cultural heritage with numerous art galleries, theater, ballet and concerts. Visit L’Isle-sur-la-Sorges, a pretty little market town, for antiquing and shopping, and stop by to explore the hilltop villages of Lacoste and Roussillon. Salon-de-Provence, midway between the Luberon and Alpilles, offers interesting museums and a long, interesting history.
