The picture postcard Greek island of your dreams. The hills are dotted with the classic white cubist buildings, and harbors feature little boats bobbing in the waves. Taking a private villa on Mykonos offers travelers the rare and exquisite experience; the best of all possible worlds. With privacy and luxurious amenities, visitors can then easily reach the best beaches, villages, tavernas, and sights.
A tremendously popular island, it is accessible via domestic and international airlines. Flights from the UK via EasyJet arrive daily, and Olympic Air or Aegean Airlines have daily flights from Athens.
Ferry services depart daily from Athens or from Rafina (a suburb of the city). Blue Star Ferries offers car service, but takes seven hours to reach the island from Athens. The high-speed catamarans of Sea Jets and Hellenic Seaways cut the time in half, and there are many small domestic boats that can help you "island hop" too. Traveling on Mykonos is by car, taxi, bus, scooter, bicycle, ATV, or around its perimeter by boat.
The most frequently visited town on the island is Mykonos Town, and it is as gorgeous as the myriad photos available. Very cosmopolitan, it features a harbor, scores of cafes and shops along charming streets, classic island architecture, and high-quality amenities to support the scores of world travelers who embark on a visit each year. It is a must-see destination, and ideal walking town.
Other villages include Ano Mera, tucked inland and home to the Panagia Tourliani monastery extant from the mid-1500s; Ornos, Playts Gialos with its lovely fishing boats, Tourlos (which can be crowded as it is the main port for travelers), and Agios Stefanos with its amazing dining.
There is much to see on Mykonos, including the famous windmills built in the 1500s, the church known as the Panagia Paraportiani, the area known as Little Venice which is but five minutes from the windmills, the many beaches, the excellent museums, and (if time allows) a brief trip to the uninhabited island of Delos where an ancient theater is still found.
Taking a private villa gives you the best of all options allowing you peaceful enjoyment of the scenery, but putting you within easy reach of the villages, beaches, shops, and amazing dining options.
