It has been more than half a century since Lord Glenconner, also known as Colin Tennant visited the island of Mustique and decided to purchase the barren and undeveloped island. Since that time, it has become the Mustique Company, comprised of the homeowners on the island and a group dedicated to retaining its luxurious charm and natural beauty.
One of the very first things done when the island was purchased was to convert an old cotton warehouse into a suitable spot for offering accommodations to discerning travelers. Today, that project remains and is The Cotton House, a site that set the bar for design throughout the island. The beauty of the property demonstrated the overall appeal of living on the island, and soon the world's most famous musicians, artists, socialites, designers and more were investing in the very limited ownership opportunities.
That is how the island has come to be such a luxurious and private retreat. The standards set by the design and creation of The Cotton House have forced the rest of Mustique to meet that same level.
Since its restoration all of those years ago, The Cotton House has expanded into a full-blown estate. Sitting on 13 manicured acres, and lined on one side by the crested beach of the lovely Endeavour Bay, it offers a range of public and private spaces to enjoy.
Wandering through the tropical gardens, visitors will be able to easily make their way to the waterfront of Endeavor Bay. Here you can enjoy the beach, book dive time at the dive shop or head to the Beach Café to sample its delicious ice cream or an afternoon cocktail.
The Cotton Mill Museum is also nearby and features one of the public pools. Passing the lovely stand of native tamarind, jasmine, gardenia and bougainvillea, visitors can make their way back towards the Great Room Bar and Veranda Restaurant.
This main building is a true hotspot on the island. The Great Room is actually surrounded by the Veranda and it is where meals can be enjoyed throughout the day. As the sun sets, the space is reorganized for more intimate groupings, and the house chefs create amazing meals from locally sourced ingredients.
The Spa, Gym & Boutique are a short distance from the Veranda and across the compound are the professional grade tennis courts.
Dotting the landscape within the Estate are the different accommodations as well.
