This remarkable haven features vast stretches of untouched wetlands, secluded bays, peaceful inlets, vibrant coral reefs, and thriving mangrove forests. A true sensory delight, Sian Ka’an is also an important nesting area along the Caribbean coast. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is rich in biodiversity and forms part of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere program, which supports sustainable harmony between local activities and protected natural areas.
Supporting the local economy through fishing and tourism, the sanctuary is protected by reserve regulations that promote responsible practices and help shield the coastline from excessive development.
This sanctuary offers an extraordinary opportunity to explore its wetlands by boat. Accompanied by local fishermen, guests travel through lagoons and mangrove forests, heading south across an unspoiled landscape. The route includes Boca Paila, where there may be opportunities to spot crocodiles, manatees, and a wide variety of birdlife that lives in or migrates through the area. Choosing a boat excursion instead of the traditional road trip through Sian Ka’an creates a more unique and memorable experience.
After this adventurous journey, the lagoon meets Ascension Bay and the open ocean beyond. Here, the colors of the water subtly shift, while the vast Caribbean sky stretches endlessly overhead.
With a bit of luck, playful local dolphins may be seen in their natural habitat, along with various sea turtle species that call this bay home. When the waters are calm, guests may also enjoy a snorkeling experience along a section of the barrier reef, home to many marine species. This activity is subject to sea conditions.
To complete the experience, a serene sandbank known as “nature’s swimming pool” invites guests to relax and swim in crystal-clear waters during the boat excursion.
