Turks and Caicos Vacation Guide

In the Caribbean region of the world sit the beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands. This British Overseas Territory is comprised of 40 small islands with some little cays scattered throughout the archipelago, as well. There are only eight of the islands that are inhabited though. Those eight islands are Providenciales, Parrot Cay, Pine Cay, North Caicos, South Caicos, Middle Caicos, Salt Cay and Grand Turk.

Turks & Caicos is a fabulous and highly sought after destination due to the tantalizing ocean blues and the pure white sand beaches. As many know, whether enjoyed above the waves or below, the waters around the Turks & Caicos are a destination all their own.

Though you can spend a great deal of time playing golf, watching birds, shopping, dining and enjoying the scenery, it is the beaches (and water sports) of Turks & Caicos that bring so many visitors. Scuba diving, sea kayaking, sunbathing, snorkeling, sailing, parasailing, fishing and swimming are what most travelers to the islands find themselves doing each day.

For beach purists, there is no better destination.  While famous Grace Bay beach has continually been voted as one of the best beaches in the world, there are numerous beaches that are just as majestic to explore.  Travelers should seek out Taylor Beach, Long Bay Beach and Sapodilla Bay just to name a few.

People from all over the world travel to Turks and Caicos for the amazing, vibrant blue waters with their turquoise hues, that wash up to the bright white sand on what are some of the most gorgeous beaches anywhere on the planet. This destination attracts those looking to lay out on the beach and relax, but it also has a very strong appeal for divers and snorkelers due to the impressive reefs that bring in some beautiful sea life to observe. This island group has one of the biggest barrier reefs anywhere. The waters are very calm so there’s so much you can do out on it that will be safe and fun. More than a million people visit this island paradise every year and it’s easy to see why.

Providenciales

Providenciales island is the most popular of all the islands for those taking a Turks and Caicos vacation. And why wouldn’t it be? Grace Bay on this island has been voted Best Beach in the World more than once by some of the most trusted names in the travel industry. Grace Bay has tons of white sand that are so very soft for sinking feet into or laying out on. Play a volleyball game and all of your dives will be into fluffy, cloud-like sand that will feel more like you’re landing on a pillow. This beach is 3 miles long so it’s got enough room for everyone to have their own space. Kids and adults alike will find Grace Bay beach on Providenciales an amazing place to spend a day on a Turks and Caicos trip.

Turks and Caicos has it all. It’s picturesque, relaxing, action-packed, thrilling, inspiring and more. We have many Turks and Caicos Villas to rent in the best locations found on these islands. You can find the best accommodations in one of the best vacation spots in the world with us.

Things To Do In the Turks and Caicos Islands

This is not somewhere you’ll ever get bored. There are so many things to do in the Turks and Caicos islands. If you like water sports, you’ll find them all here. If you want somewhere scenic to lay out and take in some rays, it doesn’t really get better than Turks and Caicos. Want to go fishing, diving or snorkeling? This is is your spot. If there ever was an island paradise, this is it.

Spend the Day Beach Hopping or Island Hopping

One thing you have to do when you go on your Turks and Caicos vacation is beach hopping or island hopping. There are tours or beach cruises that you can take that will take you around from island to island so you can check out the different beaches that they all have to offer. There are different lengths of tours to look into. Anything that’s half of a day or more usually comes with a lunch BBQ that features the islands’ specialty of fresh conch and/or lobster.

Try Out Snorkeling

Seeing what’s under the water while you’re on your Turks and Caicos trip is a must. On Providenciales, you can snorkel straight from the beach. If you pick the perfect sunny day when the waters are at their calmest, you’ll have the best experience and will be able to see everything under the water with high clarity.

For an even more exciting snorkeling experience, head out on one of the many snorkeling cruises that take visitors to Smith’s Reef. Or if you are staying in a Turtle Cove villa such as Beach Villa Tamarind, all you need to do is jump into the water to explore Smith's reef.   You’ll get a chance to see more varieties of reef fish, more impressive formations of coral and reef, and have a better likelihood of catching a glimpse of larger sea animals.

Go Deep Sea Fishing

The archipelago of Turks and Caicos has the perfect underwater terrain for deep sea fishing. These islands sit on a marine plateau. It’s a flat area that has sheer drop-offs where the water gets deep. That means that in about 10 minutes of a boat ride, you can be out on water that goes thousands of feet deep and fish your day away.

Providenciales is the hub of all the big game and sports fishing. This island has two marinas that serve as headquarters for several charter companies that will get you out on the deep seas so you can catch “the big one.” Even before anyone really knew about the beaches, anglers were coming to fish in Turks and Caicos. There are a couple of big fishing competitions for those who want to get really serious about it.

Try Your Hand at Kitesurfing

Kite surfing, or kite boarding as it’s known to some, is fun and super popular in the Turks and Caicos islands. Long Bay Beach on Providenciales is one of the busiest spots for kite surfing. Usually, the best time of year for kite surfing is in the winter months. But it can be done at other times too. You just need a decently windy day to do it. Summer will likely have some days that are breezy enough for kite surfing, but they’ll be sandwiched on both sides by calm, sunny, windless days.

Visit Parrot Cay

Parrot Cay is a private island that sits between North Caicos and Providenciales. There is a resort there and just a handful of Turks and Caicos villas and private residences. The rest of the small island, which is only about 1,000 acres, is covered in pure natural beauty. The whole north side of the island is nothing but beach. This island is a remote little paradise of its own.

Private Boat Charters

The breathtaking land and waterscapes of Providenciales tantalize guests to further explore their exquisite beauty. What better way to experience one of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean then by your own private charter.

Turks and Caicos Restaurants to Try

Coco Bistro

This restaurant is worth leaving your Turks and Caicos villa for. Coco Bistro is set in the middle of a large grove of tall, majestic palm trees. It’s located in Grace Bay on Providenciales. You get to dine out under the stars and listen to the sound of the breeze blowing through the tops of the palm trees. The menu features all the food that the Turks and Caicos Islands are known for conch and other seafood specialties. The food is delicious and presented beautifully.

Provence

The chef of Provence, Chef Eric, makes incredible food that is inspired by his heritage, Italian and French. This chef has worked in three restaurants that all received the Michelin star. The restaurant has seating inside or on an outdoor patio. The menu has plenty to choose from and there is sure to be something that everyone will like.

Seven

Seven is located in Grace Bay on Providenciales. The name was given because of the Seven Stars constellation that it sits beneath. Diners can dine out under the stars and gaze up toward that constellation. The restaurant is high-end and so is the food. The menu was designed with the islands in mind but with a contemporary twist added in. You’ll find amazing seafood at Seven, as well as some tasty cocktails.

Caribbean Element

Caribbean Element is also located in Grace Bay on Providenciales. The executive chef and his staff bring with them a combined 30 years of international cooking experience amongst them. The food is kind of an island fusion style of sorts. You’ll find influences from Mexico, Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas and the Caribbean in the items on the menu.

Kitchen 218 at the Beach House

Kitchen 218 is located in the Beach House resort. It’s newer than some of the others on our list. This is a more simple restaurant that is situated with the pool in the background. They have a tasting menu that lets you get 7 courses with the proper wine pairings. It’s a fun way to spend an evening. There are lots of good seafood dishes and delicious entrees that are suitable for a vegetarian diet.

Where to Stay in the Turks and Caicos Islands

Choosing where to stay on the Turks and Caicos islands should really just depend on what kinds of things you like to do. There isn’t a bad spot anywhere within these gorgeous islands, but there are certain spots that are better for doing specific types of activities than others. Providenciales is the island that has it all, including Grace Bay beach, the number one beach in the world according to some. But it has many other spots that have their own amazing things to offer so you’re wise to look for the spot that matches your interests for a Turks and Caicos vacation that’s unforgettable.

Grace Bay Beach

Grace Bay is at the heart of all there is to do on Providenciales. There are lots of amazing restaurants, the two main marinas, bars, shops and so much more. If you like to be close to everything there is to do, or at least within easy access of it, then we recommend Grace Bay Beach. Our Turks and Caicos vacation rentals in Grace Bay include a range of villas from affordable beachfront cottages to the renowned Hawksbill Estate. The eastern end of Grace Bay beach hosts some of the finest villas in all of the Caribbean. A few villas to drool over are villa AWA, Coral Pavillion, and Sentosa.

Taylor Bay Beach

One of our most popular locations on Providenciales. A perfect place for honeymoons. On the south end of Providenciales is Taylor Bay. The beach is only about 2,000 feet long but it’s protected by a peninsula called Ocean Point. The trade winds don’t reach the beach like they do in other parts of the island. This is a great area for small children because the water is very shallow and calm. This area isn’t close to any of the great snorkeling spots. Those who stay here are close to the Chalk Sound National Park and the Sapodilla Bay Hill Rock Carvings.

Villa Bari, Sorrento and Sardinia are stunning one bedroom beachfront villas with private pool located directly on the beach.

Long Bay Beach

Long Bay Beach is the premier spot for kitesurfing on the island of Providenciales, so if that’s your thing, then choosing a villa on Long Bay Beach is a good option for you. It’s located on the southeast side of the island and is three miles long. Because it’s on the south side of the island, there aren’t a ton of large waves but sometimes you’ll find some choppiness in the waters. Long Bay gives guests a little more privacy than what is found in Grace Bay and is equally as beautiful.

The Beach Enclave Long Bay has launched an impeccable collection of luxury villas.

Leeward

Leeward is located on the eastern coast of the Providenciales. Leeward has a sliver of beach adjacent to Grace Bay beach. The beach is as amazing as Grace Bay but has far fewer people on it most of the time. This is in a more upscale area of the island. This is a great place to stay for couples who are looking for somewhere a little more secluded. There aren’t as many things to do that are right there, but you still won’t be far from the action of Grace Bay so you can go out for a day trip somewhere else and come back to relax in the privacy of your Leeward villa such as villa Cassis.

Turtle Tail

Turtle Tail is another area where visitors to the Turks and Caicos islands can find some privacy and space of their own. There are a series of smaller beaches that make up Turtle Tail and most of the area is only accessible to the people staying in the Turks and Caicos villas that are along the beaches. The water is shallow and you can even walk out as far as some of the small cays that are right across from Turtle Tail. This is a good choice for visitors that are looking for something intimate and private. Villa Tip of the Tail is an immensely popular villa in the area. Wymara has launched a bespoke enclave of luxury villas in Turtle Tail.

Beach Guide For Turks and Caicos

Grace Bay Beach

The hub of it all, this beach leaves nothing to be desired. It’s incredibly scenic, close to great snorkeling, has tons of restaurants around and can be pretty happening. You can spend an entire day, or two, or three on this beach and find new things to do all the time.

Long Bay Beach

This is the beach for kite surfers. On some days you can see dozens of kites out over the water. There are good winds and nice waters to give you an awesome day of kite-surfing. The beach is also gorgeous with the soft, white sand that Turks and Caicos vacations are known for.

Taylor Bay Beach

For a great family day at the beach, Taylor Bay beach is perfect. The water is shallow and calm. The trade winds are blocked by a peninsula so you can have a nice picnic on the sand with your kids. It’s not a very big beach, but it’s beautiful and serene, so it will make a good day out.

Sapodilla Bay Beach

Another good choice for families, and especially those with small children is Sapodilla Bay. Again, the water is super shallow and calm. The beach is small, so on busy days at peak times, Sapodilla Bay can seem a little crowded, but the waters are so warm here because of the sun hitting the sheltered bay that it will still make anyone happy to be there.

Turtle Tail

Turtle Tail is tough to get to. There’s no real public access but you can get to the beaches from the road in some places. If you choose to find a Turks and Caicos vacation rental at Turtle Tail beach then you’ll have access from your villa. Turtle Tail is really made up of a few smaller beaches. There are little cays that you can wade out to off the shore through the shallow waters. It gives a unique experience you can’t get at other beaches.

Turks and Caicos Vacation Planning Tips

The key to planning your Turks and Caicos trip is really just knowing what kind of vacation you want. Do you want a fun-filled trip that’s packed with water sports and going out at night? Are you more into some seclusion and just basking in the sun all day with a good book? Or would you like a little of both? Pick your location based on what your answers to those questions are.

When to Travel to Turks and Caicos

The winter months are some of the best on these islands if you like to surf or kite board. But you can plan your trip anytime between November to about mid-August. Remember that this area does have the occasional hurricane or tropical storm in that season but it’s really quite rare for the storms to hit right there.

Turks and Caicos Weather

Usually, the temperature is in the 80s, but it can sometimes get into the 90s at certain times in the year. The trade winds keep the islands feeling comfortable most of the time. There are rain showers from time to time but not very often. On average, there will be about 350 days of sunshine a year.
